Clay Courts

Clay courts are loved for their unique playing qualities, but they require regular maintenance to stay in top condition. As a groundsman or manager of clay courts, the following maintenance activities are essential to maintain quality and playability:

Drag and Brush

Regular dragging and brushing of the track is critical. This levels the gravel surface, restores texture and provides consistent bounce and grip. It also prevents the gravel from becoming too compact.

Line markers

Make sure the lines on the track are clearly and accurately marked. Regular inspection and updating of lines are important to avoid confusion during the game.

Clay replacement

Over time the gravel will wear out. Regular topping or replacement of the clay is necessary to maintain the quality of the playing surface.

Weed management

Keep the course free of weeds and grass that could affect playability. Regular weeding and the use of environmentally friendly weed killers are important.

Drainage and Water Management

Ensure good drainage to prevent flooding. It is important that rainwater is drained effectively and that puddles do not form.

Swipe and
Leaf work

Keep the track free of leaves, branches and other debris. This can improve playability and prevent organic matter from accumulating on the surface.

Safety and Maintenance of Nets

Regularly check the nets and the safety of the fences around the track. This ensures the safety of players and the integrity of the course.

Maintaining clay courts requires dedication and attention to detail. A well-maintained clay court provides players with an excellent playing environment and extends the life of the facility. Professionals with expertise in clay court maintenance can be invaluable in ensuring the course remains in top shape.
